Not too short and not too long and a super decent effort to run or walk.
Like the 5km, your mission takes you on a short road section to spread the field, then through that super cool long tunnel that you may have seen pictures on the website. Exiting the tunnel at about the 2km mark you enter the twisting hard packed trails of the Craters Mountain Bike park. Emerging from the bush, it is time to sprint, run, jog or walk the moody Craters of the Moon board walk (4km in). This 1.5km loop track is amazing during the day and next level at night – think headlamps bouncing off geothermal steam. Key note – when you exit the Craters of the moon boardwalk loop, follow the trail and don’t do a second loop (yes this has happened in the past). Oh and yes your Aid Station is located at the 4km mark, so stock up on water, electrolyte and a hand full of lollies – sours, snakes, wine gums, we are the sugar kings!
OK now you have earned a descent and are on your way home on an epic winding downhill trail with some corners so tight that you will be leaning over like a mountain biker… maybe. Is that hill at the limit of your headlamp, well yes it is and you have got this. Put your legs into low gear and chug your way up to the ridge where you will be treated with views of the power station and will be able to see the searchlights at the event base. You have about 2km to go now and I promise it is a downhill run all the way to the finish. Make sure you run the finish line and hold your head high – you smoked the 12km. Grab a beverage and check out the 2 relaxing hot pools on site free for your use.
